Rev the McLaren 650S to a staggering 8500rpm and it’ll feel like a racecar as 650PS flows to the rear tyres. Yet its twin turbochargers gift it the flexibility of a luxury car, with 95% of the M838T engine’s prodigious 678Nm torque available between 3000-7000rpm.
The all-aluminium, twin-turbocharged, 3.8-litre V8 sits low in the chassis to improve the centre of gravity, giving the McLaren 650S a feeling of agility and composure that has to be experienced to be believed. Specially engineered for the McLaren 650S, it features over 1,100 crafted parts, dry-sump lubrication and a flat-plane crankshaft, and weighs just 198kg.
Accelerate towards a heady 8500rpm then pull the rocker shift paddle on the steering wheel. There’s no let-up in performance, just super-quick engagement from the seven-speed Seamless-Shift Gearbox, keeping the engine in its powerband for maximum driver engagement. The Seamless-Shift gearbox also delivers impeccable refinement at low speeds and high levels of efficiency.
